case 1:
On 3rd Oct.2012 Miss Bnar Gazi a 8 year old girl suffering from a serious blood disease Thalassemia Major came with her parents to Lotus Hospital, Nashik ,Maharashtra (India). As her father knew about this disease and he was searching for a permanent cure for her disease. In Thalassemia Major, patients need blood every month. Bone marrow transplantation is only the curative treatment recommended worldwide. In India Dr.Pritesh Junagade's Lotus Hospital is only private hospital where this treatment is available at affordable cost. Dr.Priteshn Junagade is UK trained and certified Haemato-Oncologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Physician.
Mr.Hemn is a worker and lives in Erbil,Iraq. He was not able to pay charges for this costly treatment procedure in western countries, so many experts advised him to go India. After primary blood investigations Dr. Junagade discussed about procedure its complications, difficulties with Mr.Hemn with the help of interpreter. Blood samples of his son was sent for HLA typing, a test done for searching whether a donor can donate marrow to this patient.
On 10th Oct. reports were seen by Dr.Junagade. Luckily Miss Bnar's brother Yunus was match! On 15th Oct 2012 actual Bone Marrow transplant (Stemcell) procedure was carried out by Dr.Junagade & his expert team. On 5th Nov these transplanted stemcells (Bone Marrow) start working. In next 3-4 days her blood count became normal which is documented proof for successful Bone Marrow Transplantation. Since 10thOct.2012 she has not received even single blood bag. Dr.Junagade congratulated her father for his courage & declared his daughter is Thalassemia free now. It was really an amazing moment for him

Patient Information
If the Doctor decides to admit the patient then the patient will be issued an Admission Slip-I (Manual request slip for admission) with the details about the treatment required and an expected duration of stay of the patient. Admission staff will allot the room / bed according to your desired category, if available. In case of non availability of the room in the desired category, the staff will put your name in waiting list and will inform you on the availability. On a repeat admission, you can request for a room in a desired category on telephone 0253-2574967 in advance for a particular day. Surgical Oncology
The department is headed by Dr. Ajay Jadhav Mch (surgical Oncology) TATA hospital, Mumbai.He is the first Mch Oncosurgeon in north Maharashtra. We perform all kinds of cancer surgeries.
We have a state of the art Operation theatre with surgical ICU.
Medical Oncology
Medical oncology services include all diagnostic workup of a suspected cancer patient and then plan chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.We deal with all kinds on cancers. Chemotherapy is planned and given according to the schedule. Chemotherapy is prepared in a designated area with all aseptic precautions and checked thoroughly before reaching patient bedside.
All the expected side-effects are explained in detail to the patient and their relatives. We understand that it can be a stressful time for the family and hence take utmost care to make this a pleasant experience.
Follow up appointments and day unit chemotherapy is preferred so that patient can go home the same day.
Haemophilia Care Centre
Haemophilia can be a difficult disease to manage. We at Lotus Institute strive hard to make life comfortable for the patients and their relatives. We keep all the records of our haemophilia patients and provide factor replacement when necessary. Complex surgeries can also be done at our institute if needed.
We have social workers who assist the patients to get financial support from private institutions and private donors affiliated with Lotus institute.

Bone Marrow Transplantation
Dr Pritesh Junagade heads the department of stem cell transplantation at Lotus Institute. He has performed over 300 allogeneic and autologous bone marrow (stem cell) transplant. He was trained in London at King's College hospital, Royal free hospital , St George's and Royal Marsden hospital, all premier institutes of global reputation, where bone marrow (stem cell) transplants are being done.Dr Junagade's dream of affordable bone marrow transplantation was realized in Nashik, India in August 2010 when he performed the first bone marrow transplant at half the price of what is charged in Mumbai, India or rest of the country. Nashik also became the first tier 2 city in India to perform such a feat.
The patient had a disease called aplastic anaemia, where blood cells are not formed.

We are the blessed, special one in the society. There are many who need our help, not only financial but also social, emotional and sometimes just a caring hand. In our day to day life we do our own share of social work.
Many diseases I treat are hereditary diseases. There is always a “blame game” in the family after I discuss the diagnosis. Unfortunately the female member is at receiving end most of the time, most often due to misconceptions, lack of knowledge and dearth of education. Cancer is still a stigma in our society and I have seen many a times treatment being denied to such patients due to social stigma and fear of the people around. If the patient is a female, then many a times diagnosis and the treatment is kept a secret so as to “protect” her and the ultimate fate of such females, that is the institution of marriage. I have seen many young, female cancer patients, who otherwise would have been cured (as in childhood blood cancer) denied treatment due to the fear of society rather than the financial implications alone. Many times patients are misguided by the unnecessary fear of a seemingly simple treatment for a disease and then they suffer physically, mentally and financially. This is due to past experiences of own self or near and dear ones, who may have different disease or due to lack of medical facilities at that time.
After returning from London in 2008, I have come across all types of patients, many have taught me some hard facts of our life. Many patients, especially those in whom cancer was diagnosed, have brought forth the “real” problems of our society we live in. There are many things we take for granted.

We doctors do try and inculcate knowledge, teach our patients and remove various misconceptions in our daily practice. I thought that is not enough! We need to reach out to the society and create a positive atmosphere regarding many hereditary diseases, cancer and dietary practices we follow.
Many of my elderly patients with cancer cannot be cured completely. They need homely care in their last days. In today’s world due to lack of time, financial constraints, misconceptions about the cancer spread in family and lack of special centre’s for terminally ill patients many such patients die a miserable death. We need to educate the society about the true facts of cancer care and provide terminal care centre and hospice to make the suffering less and maintain the dignity of the patient till he breathes his last.
All these above mentioned problems made us start “Junagade Health Foundation” as we always need a platform to carry on social activities. Main objectives of our trust are:
- Create awareness about hereditary diseases like thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, hemophilia
- To offer free treatment for thalassaemia and sickle cell disease patients.
- To eradicate thalassaemia and sickle cell disease by population screening programmes.
- To conduct cancer awareness programmes and educate the society about cancer treatment.
- To provide monetary help to needy cancer patients.
- To provide 24 hours helpline for cancer patients to address their physical and emotional problems.
- To provide monetary help for needy patients who need stem cell therapy for various haematological diseases.
- To start terminal cancer care centres.
- To conduct cancer detection camps in rural places.
- To conduct anaemia detection camp in rural places.
- To promote stem cell research for eradication of hereditary diseases.
- To arrange public lectures for education of cancer and other diseases.
- To lobby for government support and implement their various health programmes.

Our association with Nashik started 37 years ago, when my father Dr Subhash Junagade, Pathologist started his practice and thus became the first Pathologist of this region in North Maharashtra.
